Big Bang Energy: Static Noise Challenge
Ages 8-1415 minutesMedium Difficulty
About This Activity
Discover how scientists accidentally detected cosmic microwave background radiation, the oldest light in the universe, using simple static noise.
Materials Needed
- An old television with static (if available)
- An AM radio
Safety Notes
- Ask an adult before using electronic devices.
- Do not touch electrical outlets or exposed wires.
Instructions
- 1. If you have an old TV, turn it to an empty channel and listen to the static noise.
- 2. If you have an AM radio, tune it to a low-frequency channel below 530 kHz and listen to the static between stations.
- 3. Some of the static you hear is actually cosmic background radiation left over from the Big Bang!
How It Works
The Big Bang left behind faint microwave radiation that can still be detected today. Scientists first discovered this static noise by accident when using a radio antenna.
Tips for Success
- Try tuning into different AM frequencies to hear variations in static noise.
- Compare the static noise in different locations to see if it changes.
